OD5 - The Eyelid Evolution - Dr. Selina McGee

1 CE | COPE: 101870-TD

The eyelids play a crucial role in maintaining ocular surface health, uniquely designed to protect and support the eye. Unlike any other skin on the body, the eyelids are particularly vulnerable to various diseases and the effects of aging. From benign growths and dermatochalasis to fine lines and ptosis, these changes can impact both function and aesthetics. This course will explore the underlying causes, key clinical considerations, and, most importantly, how we as optometric physicians can effectively diagnose, manage, and treat eyelid conditions to support our patients’ ocular and periocular health.  The eyelids are just the beginning of optometry’s next frontier.

OD12 - TFOS DEWS III - Evidence Based Update on Dry Eye Disease - Dr. James Wolffsohn

COPE: 101854-TD

Over 2000 journal publications are published on dry eye disease each year, which begs the question of how a practicing clinician is expected to keep up with the latest evidence to inform their practice. Global consensus reports are a helpful way of distilling the published literature to provide clinical recommendations, as well as to identify gaps for addressing in future research. The Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society first published a Dry Eye Workshop report in 2007, using the evidence available at the time to define dry eye, examine its epidemiology and pathophysiology, to develop a diagnostic algorithm and review the management options. The process was repeated for publication in 2017 and now, eight years on, TFOS DEWS III is being published. This 2-hour rapid fire session will present the latest evidence-base from newly published literature related to dry eye disease, on its definition, diagnosis and management, along with an update on elements such as its epidemiology, pathophysiology, the tear film and the role of sex, gender and hormones.

OD16 - Mature Eyes, Modern World: International Strategies for Presbyopia (Cornea, Contact Lenses & Refractive Technologies Section) - Dr. James Wolffsohn

1 CE | COPE: 101853-GO

Presbyopia is a global problem affecting over a billion people worldwide. The prevalence of unmanaged presbyopia is as high as 50% of those over 50 years of age in developing world populations, due to a lack of awareness and accessibility to affordable treatment, and is even as high as 34% in developed countries. Definitions of presbyopia are inconsistent and varied, so we propose a redefinition that states "presbyopia occurs when the physiologically normal age-related reduction in the eye's focusing range reaches a point, when optimally corrected for distance vision, that the clarity of vision at near is insufficient to satisfy an individual's requirements".

Strategies for correcting presbyopia include separate optical devices located in front of the visual system (reading glasses) or a change in the direction of gaze to view through optical zones of different optical powers (bifocal, trifocal or progressive addition spectacle lenses), monovision (with contact lenses, intraocular lenses, laser refractive surgery and corneal collagen shrinkage), simultaneous images (with contact lenses, intraocular lenses and corneal inlays), pinhole depth of focus expansion (with intraocular lenses, corneal inlays and pharmaceuticals), crystalline lens softening (with lasers or pharmaceuticals) or restored dynamics (with 'accommodating' intraocular lenses, scleral expansion techniques and ciliary muscle electrostimulation); these strategies may be applied differently to the two eyes to optimise the range of clear focus for an individual's task requirements and minimise adverse visual effects. However, none fully overcome presbyopia in all patients. While the restoration of natural accommodation or an equivalent remains elusive, guidance is given on presbyopic correction evaluation techniques.

1 CE | COPE: 101874-FV

Ophthalmic imaging in the pediatric population can yield valuable results that contribute to the management of various anterior and posterior segment conditions. This population may pose a particular challenge to obtain accurate and reliable images, most often due to age and/or maturity level. Thus, maximizing imaging utility is paramount. Corneal topography, VEP, OCT, visual field, fundus photos/autofluorescence, and B-scan are useful modalities that will be discussed. Complex cases will be presented with the associated imaging results, guiding clinicians in effective treatment and management. Future imaging techniques will also be introduced.

OD25 - Exploring the D.A.O. The Dermatologic, Aesthetic, and Ophthalmologic Co-Conspirators of Ocular Surface Inflamation - Dr. Laura Periman

1 CE | COPE: 102898-TD

Ocular surface inflammation is frequently mischaracterized as isolated dry eye disease, when in reality it reflects a complex interaction between dermatologic inflammation, facial anatomy and neuromuscular function, and ocular immune dysregulation. This course introduces the D.A.O. framework, an interdisciplinary, phenotype-based approach that identifies dermatologic (rosacea, Demodex), aesthetic/anatomic (facial structure, blink mechanics, neuromuscular dysfunction), and ophthalmologic (immune-mediated inflammation) contributors to chronic ocular surface disease.

Using international clinical consensus statements, emerging diagnostic standards, and recent quantitative blink mechanics research, attendees will learn how incomplete blinking, facial muscle dysfunction, and lid margin disease perpetuate inflammation and treatment failure. The course emphasizes practical examination techniques, objective diagnostic criteria, and integrated management strategies that improve patient outcomes by addressing ocular surface disease at its true sources.

OA3 - Capture Your Patients At Every Touchpoint - Sponsored by Eye Recommend

It is much more cost effective to keep the patients we have now than to find new ones. In this interactive session, we will discuss ways to do that at each touchpoint the patient has in the office. Everyone plays a part in selling to our patients in different ways. Discover how we can maximize the time each person on the team has with patients in order to sell or educate on the products and solutions you can provide. This session can be broken up into two 1 hour sessions; one hour geared toward the team in the office (front desk, pretesting and gallery) and one hour for the ODs.

For the team, we’ll discuss why is retaining patients important, what patients want and how to ask the  right questions. From front desk to pretesting and then into the gallery, we all have a part to play in retaining our patients. For the ODs, we will discuss how to maximize the valuable time you have with each patient to prepare them to buy in your office before passing them on to the experts in your practice so their job is easier. The hand off is part of that pathway so learning tips to enhance that transfer of trust is crucial to a smooth patient experience.

OA4 - Objections Are An Opportunity - Sponsored by Eye Recommend

While some people think objections mean someone is looking for an excuse to NOT buy from you, the truth is that objections are an opportunity. They should be welcomed and appreciated. It means someone wants to know more about WHY they should buy from you, they just don’t know how to ask the right questions.

This session will provide you with a formula you can apply to any objection that will make you more comfortable and feel better prepared to not only overcome objections, but actually embrace them.
